Rigid Gas Permeable Content Lenses
Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses have a small diameter (about 8 mm) and are few tenths of a millimeter thick. Materials used for the lenses are rigid, and gas permeable. As cornea is the only tissue of the human body that does not contain blood vessels.
Since the material of the lens is gas permeable, so the oxygenation of the cornea take place as the tears flow under the lenses. This allows the possibility of wearing the rigid lens for an extended time frame (day and night).Rigid lenses allow better visual quality than soft lenses.
This is particularly noticeable for astigmatism and people are dissatisfied with changes in their vision, the rigid lens perfectly corrects corneal astigmatism, allowing a stable vision. Besides we can also mention the high quality of vision that makes these contact lenses very pleasant and very effective for the correction of vision, and these have excellent handling characteristics that make lenses very practical and easy to use even for the younger users
People living in dry atmospheric conditions (like Air Conditioning) can also wear contact lenses, this is best suitable for dry eyes. The rigid lenses have a longer life and are easy to use and if you take good care they will last you for years. These lenses are cheaper and provide better resistance to deposits of protein, calcium and other minerals from your tears term.
Lenses has become usable after a long history as they caused irritated eyes, and it was not until 1971 that the first gas permeable lenses were introduced in the market and number of inventions followed in 80s: tinted lenses, vial lenses and extended use bifocal lenses.
Moreover, rigid lenses are often an alternative for soft lens for those who experience problems with excessive tears.
An individual is less prone to Infections and Allergies as compared to the soft lenses. The only disadvantage of the rigid lenses is the discomfort during blinking; the eyelid passes over the edge of the lens, resulting in watery eyes and a contraction of the eyelids, which disappears as an individual gets used to the rigid lenses.
At the end we would like to say that the rigid contact lenses offer a very good vision and are very easy to handle and maintain, so you have no reason to hesitate to use them!
